- Carbon Credits. Progress. 🌎 Article 6 Implementation Partnership advocates the speed up of real transactions with integrity, 🇪🇺 EU proposes climate target with limited use of international credits, and 🇩🇴 Dominican Republic launches pilot emissions trading system — signaling that Article 6 is gaining traction.
- Other Highlights of the Week 26. 🌍 New DNV report shows carbon capture is set to grow by 2050, but will still cover only 6% of global emissions and more incentives and infrastructure are needed. 🛰️ From space, the Biomass satellite reveals hidden carbon in forests 🌳, while MethaneSAT, launched to track methane, was lost — a setback for climate surveillance.
- Opportunities. 🌍📊 Chloris reveals 25 years of high-resolution biomass data, while the CO2Free Seal recognizes Brazilian 🇧🇷registries that neutralize carbon with environmental practices.
- Events. 📍🇧🇷The 3rd Brazil Climate and Carbon Conference (July 22–23, São Paulo) and the 1st Brazilian GHG Inventory Conference (July 24, Curitiba) drive debates on carbon markets and pre-COP30; while the 🇦🇺 12th Australasian Emissions Reduction Summit (August 13–14, Melbourne) expands the international agenda.
Here the details.
CARBON CREDITS
🌍 It’s time to move from planning to concrete carbon credit transactions with regulatory integrity and clarity.
This was the central message from the Director of the Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP) during the event at the Innovate4Climate (I4C) conference last June. Kazuhisa Koakutsu stressed that the development of regulatory frameworks and the implementation of carbon credit projects must move forward in parallel, and emphasized the importance of supporting countries in authorizing, tracking, reporting and developing real projects under Article 6, including carbon credit transactions through national and international registries. A6IP is also working with the private sector and initiatives such as the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI) to promote high-integrity carbon credits. Carbon Credit Markets has been a member of A6IP since its inception in November 2022.
🇪🇺EU proposes 2040 climate target and limits use of international carbon credits.
At a meeting held on 2 July 2025, the European Commission presented its proposal for a 2040 climate target. The document mentions the use of international carbon credits as a complementary part of the emissions reduction strategy, in line with the mechanisms provided for in Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, although it does not mention it directly in all sections. The proposal allows Member States to use up to 3% of the 2040 emissions reduction target through international credits, provided that these meet strict environmental integrity standards and are duly registered under Article 6. This flexibility aims to encourage international cooperation while maintaining the environmental credibility of the EU's targets. The introduction of these credits is expected to occur gradually from 2036, with future regulations defining the quality, traceability and eligibility criteria.
🇩🇴 Dominican Republic takes important step towards carbon pricing.
The Dominican Republic has completed the technical design of a pilot emissions trading system (ETS), with support from the UNFCCC, the Collaborative Instruments for Ambitious Climate Action (CiACA) program and financed by the Government of Germany🇩🇪. The system proposes decreasing emissions limits for the energy and cement sectors, with the possibility of partial use of carbon credits — especially from offset projects in unregulated sectors, such as agriculture and waste. This initiative is aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, by creating market instruments that allow international cooperation to achieve national climate goals.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
🌍 DNV Report Summary: Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to 2050.
DNV’s new Energy Transition Outlook: CCS to 2050 report predicts that carbon capture and storage (CCS) will grow from 41 MtCO₂/year in 2024 to 1.3 GtCO₂/year in 2050, but this still represents only 6% of global emissions – far short of what is needed to meet climate targets. Despite technological advancement and falling costs, the main challenges to scaling CCS are policy uncertainty, a lack of clear regulation and limited public acceptance. Strengthening pricing policies, incentives and storage infrastructure will be essential for effective carbon removal at scale. Read the full report here.
🛰️ Biomass satellite reveals first stunning images of forests.
This new satellite from the European Space Agency (ESA) uses an innovative radar that penetrates the forest canopy *🌳, revealing details of the soil and the internal structure of the vegetation. This technology will allow accurate estimates of the carbon stored in forests, essential for understanding the global carbon cycle and the impacts of climate change. The mission is part of ESA's FutureEO programme and is considered a significant advance in Earth observation. Read more about it.
*🌳The canopy is the upper layer of the forest formed by the tops of the trees, like a "green roof" that covers the ground. It is important because it houses a lot of biodiversity and influences the climate and the light that reaches the forest floor.
🛰️ Satellite Tracking Greenhouse Gas Lost in Space.
Launched in 2024 to monitor methane emissions, MethaneSAT was considered lost after several attempts by the control team to reconnect it. MethaneSAT was developed by the Environmental Defense Fund with support from the New Zealand Space Agency and funding from partners including the Bezos Earth Fund and Google.org .
