25th Week Carbon Credit Markets in 2026.
If you wish, accompanied by a song of your choice from our playlist.
Carbon markets continue to see robust implementation — as demonstrated at the Global Knowledge Forum 2026 and through strengthened forestry cooperation at the REDD+ Global Summit, and exemplified by Peru’s regulatory progress regarding Article 6 —consolidating a phase characterized by clear rules, strengthened MRV infrastructure, bilateral agreements with Switzerland and Singapore, the generation of ITMOs from improved cookstoves, and enhanced technical coordination across the carbon value chain.
Other highlights showcase progress on three fronts: FS has signed an offtake agreement for removal credits - “First of its Kind” according to Gold Standard - and is consolidating a pioneering BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) project in Brazil; Alberta has launched Canada’s first CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage) hub, reinforcing its leadership in decarbonization infrastructure; and Ohio (USA) has approved a comprehensive legal framework for CCS (carbon capture and storage), establishing regulatory certainty for geological CO₂ storage projects.
Briefs & Opportunities offers three valuable leads: WRI’s Climate Watch expands access to climate data essential for public and private decision-making; a CNN report on the Netherlands delivers a stark warning regarding adaptation and engineering in the face of rising seas; and the Gainesville TreeQuest campaign in Florida, USA, turns urban trees into climate education tools by simply and visually demonstrating the carbon captured and ecosystem services provided by each species.

Global Forum highlights shift toward implementation in carbon markets
The Global Knowledge Forum 2026, held in Singapore and detailed in the event's official document, demonstrated a clear shift in discussions on carbon pricing and climate markets toward practical implementation; countries are seeking support regarding instrument design, CBAM impacts, MRV and registry infrastructure, Article 6 processes, and the legal aspects of carbon credits. Sessions covered topics ranging from capacity gaps and global trends to challenges regarding interoperability, sectoral integration, and innovative infrastructure solutions. The Forum—as also highlighted by PMI Climate — underscored a strong demand for peer-to-peer technical exchange, decision-support tools, and integrated approaches linking domestic pricing, market readiness, and access to climate finance, thereby reinforcing the need for coordination across the entire carbon value chain.
REDD+ Global Summit reinforces international cooperation to accelerate forest-related actions
The side event to SB64 — the 64th session of the UNFCCC subsidiary bodies, held in Bonn, Germany, where countries negotiate technical aspects of the Paris Agreement — presented lessons from the inaugural REDD+ Global Summit, which took place from May 19 to 21, 2026, at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. The gathering brought together countries, donors, and organizations to discuss challenges and opportunities in REDD+ implementation, focusing on results-based finance, strengthening MRV, integrating forests into NDCs, and technical cooperation within the new REDD+ Community of Practice — an initiative created to facilitate the ongoing exchange of experiences and support global progress toward the goal of reducing and reversing deforestation by 2030.
Peru formalizes robust rules for generating and transferring carbon credits under Article 6
A report published by Peru on the UNFCCC portal on June 1, 2026 — a platform consolidating Article 6 reports and their technical review status — confirms that the country has structured a solid system to operate Article 6.2 cooperative approaches, utilizing ITMOs, the RENAMI registry, and bilateral agreements with Switzerland and Singapore. The regulatory framework (Supreme Decree 010-2024-MINAM) defines how mitigation activities generate emission reduction units (ERUs) and how these are verified, registered, authorized for transfer, and subjected to corresponding adjustments. The report highlights the first approved project — the Tuki Wasi Program, which will install 60,000 improved cookstoves and has the potential to generate 726,339 ITMOs by 2030—and demonstrates adherence to principles of environmental integrity, transparency, additionality, conservative baselines, and Overall Mitigation in Global Emissions (OMGE). By submitting to the UNFCCC technical review system, Peru solidifies one of the region's most comprehensive frameworks for Article 6 carbon credits, aligned with its NDC targets and long-term climate strategy.
Others Highlights
FS signs agreement to sell carbon removal credits and solidifies pioneering BECCS project in Brazil
FS has just signed a contract with Freepoint Commodities — a global commodities trading firm based in Stamford, USA — for the future purchase of 10,000 carbon removal credits generated by its BECCS project in Lucas do Rio Verde (Mato Grosso, Brazil). This project permanently captures and stores biogenic CO₂, positioning the company as the world's first carbon-negative ethanol producer. Recognized by the ANP (the Brazilian regulatory agency for oil, natural gas, and biofuels) as a pilot project for CCS regulation, the initiative also received the "First of its Kind" designation from the international carbon credit certifier Gold Standard, securing an extended 45-year crediting period. Backed by R$ 384.3 million in financing from BNDES (the Brazilian development bank) and with CO₂ injection scheduled to begin in September 2026, the project is set to store 12 million tonnes over 30 years, addressing the growing global demand for high-durability removal credits. FS is a Brazilian producer of corn ethanol and animal nutrition products; it pioneered 100% corn-based ethanol and is a national leader in bioenergy and decarbonization solutions, including advanced CCS/BECCS projects.
Alberta Launches Canada’s First Carbon Storage Hub and Expands CCUS Leadership
The announcement, released on June 4, 2026, unveils the Meadowbrook Carbon Storage Hub — developed by Bison Low Carbon Ventures — as the first operational geological CO₂ storage project in Canada. Located in Sturgeon County, the hub launches with an initial capacity of 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year and plans to expand to 3 million tonnes annually. It is backed by an initial investment of US$17 million, which could rise to US$150 million in subsequent phases. Officials highlight that the project reinforces Alberta’s leadership in CCUS, boosting industrial competitiveness, innovation, and investment attraction. Invest Alberta Corporation supported the development by facilitating engagement with investors such as Marubeni and Mizuho. The government emphasizes that the project demonstrates the province's ability to turn decarbonization ambitions into actual operations, strengthening the business environment and the strategy to expand low-emission infrastructure. United States, Ohio advances legal framework to regulate CO₂ capture and geological storage
Ohio has advanced its carbon capture and storage (CCS) legal framework with the passage of HB170 — sent to the governor on June 12, 2026 — establishing the state's first comprehensive set of rules for geological CO₂ storage. The legislation covers legal definitions, safety requirements, civil liability, and a complete permitting process for Class VI wells (wells authorized for CO₂ injection and permanent storage under the rigorous U.S. Underground Injection Control, or UIC, program). It also regulates the use of "pore space"—the void space within the pores of deep geological formations — and addresses compulsory unitization, seismic monitoring, aquifer protection, insurance, and financial assurances. The text, detailed in the legislative file below and analyzed by the Ohio State University Farm Office, grants exclusive authority to the Division of Oil and Gas Resources to oversee geological CO₂ storage projects, creating the regulatory pathway needed to enable decarbonization infrastructure in this pioneering U.S. state.
Briefs & Opportunities
Launched by WRI to make climate data open, accessible, and truly useful for guiding decisions, Climate Watch brings together global emissions, NDCs, long-term goals, and net-zero commitments in one place — currently supporting over 900 government entities. At a time of funding uncertainty, it is worth exploring the platform to understand how it can help.
An impressive CNN article showing how the Netherlands — even after centuries of living alongside the sea — needs to rethink its strategy and adopt a new approach to tackle the accelerating climate crisis. It is a powerful wake-up call regarding adaptation, engineering, and the future. It is well worth reading in full.
The city of Gainesville, Florida, is using its urban trees as tools for environmental education: through the Gainesville TreeQuest campaign, signs scattered across the city display how much carbon each species can capture — such as a palm tree that accounts for 90.6 kg of carbon, 50,000 liters of avoided runoff, and $94.23 in ecosystem services over 20 years. The initiative transforms the urban landscape into a living laboratory that brings science, climate, and the community closer together. We thank forester Carlos Gilberto Caleiro Guimarães for the photo and the inspiration.
