France preparing for the Olympic Games 2024. And for a 4°C warming increase by 2100.

Today is Monday, January 15, 2024.

The French Government is preparing to issue its PNACC-3, third National Climate Change Adaptation Plan (Plan national d’adaptation au changement climatique).

And there are strong indications that the country is already planning for a 4°C figure for the temperature increase by 2100, also meaning that the French Government, after a public consultation, considers the most pessimistic International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scenario a realistic one.

"L'objectif général du 3ème Plan national d’adaptation au changement climatique (PNACC) est de préparer la France aux conséquences d’un réchauffement mondial de 1,5 °C en 2030, 2 °C en 2050 et 3 °C en 2100". Same press release indicates that last October 19 the Minister for Ecological Transition, Christophe Béchu meet with the team responsible for the elaboration of the PNACC-3.

As a reference, the Paris Agreement’s target is to keep temperatures increase 'well below' 2°C.

France has also established a plan to face heat waves (Vagues de chaleur), which might be very relevant considering Olympic Games Paris 2024. It is organized into four axes:

  • Axis 1: limit impacts on the daily lives of French people.

  • Axis 2: guarantee the continuity of essential public services.

  • Axis 3: ensuring the continuity of economic life.

  • Axis 4: protect environments and natural resources.

PNACC-2 report with 26 pages can be downloaded by clicking at the image below, while PNACC-3 is being finalyzed, according to the the main website, from the Centre de Ressources pour L’adaptation au Changement Climatique.

By the way, the following text in French is published in there:

"As announced by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, the PNACC-3 will integrate a more realistic scenario with regard to the current dynamic, and which will ensure that the French are well protected from the impacts of the climate change. Indeed, although France is aiming for carbon neutrality in 2050, given the difficulties in stabilizing and then reducing greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale, it would be a matter of gradually adapting to the levels of global warming. compared to the pre-industrial era:

2030: +1.5°C worldwide, or +1.5°C in mainland France

2050: +2°C worldwide, or +2.7° in mainland France

2100: +3°C worldwide, or +4°C in mainland France"
