Africa: an extraordinary green hydrogen potential.

Today is Wednesday, April 3 2024.

Continuing the series of brief updates on some significant facts about hydrogen, previously posted by Carbon Credit Markets.

Africa’s extraordinary green hydrogen potential. Original post from 2023, March.

About 3 export hubs mapped in a study commissioned by the European Investment Bank, the International Solar Alliance and the Africa Union, supported by some other governments and entities. Basically Marroco and Mauritania in the Northwestern Africa hub, Egypt hub and South Africa and Namibia in the Southern Africa hub. A quite significant potential of 50 Mt of green (solar) hydrogen per year that would help secure global supply through exports. Specially to industrialised regions in the neighbourhood, such as Europe.

Update 2024, March

A March 2024 released study “The Africa Hydrogen Opportunity” by the Hydrogen Council and McKinsey & Co., reconfirms the potential, that developing renewable hydrogen production in Africa would allow both achieving continental electricity sufficiency and as well as becoming a major global exporter. USD 400 billion of investments would be required, leading to USD 15 billion new hydrogen export related proceeds for Africa by 2050. And energy security for industrialised countries.

Next post will be an update on one of the world's largest hydrogen plant in French Guiana.
