HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

⚖️🇪🇺 The European Parliament approved changes to the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) last 22 May. The measures are part of the European Commission’s Omnibus package, presented in February 2025 to simplify sustainability reporting. With the new rule, the CBAM will now apply from February 2027, instead of January 2026. In addition, the proposal includes a minimum threshold of 50 tonnes, exempting 90% of importers but still covering 99% of CO₂ emissions from essential industrial imports. Read more.

🌏🗻 The 1st International Conference on Glacier Preservation, held from May 29 to 31, took place in the same week as the shocking collapse of a glacier in Switzerland, which buried an entire village (see article below). The high-profile conference took place in Tajikistan, the country that is home to the largest number of glaciers in Central Asia and is at the epicenter of the region's accelerated glacial melting. Of the approximately 14,000 glaciers, more than a thousand have already disappeared, highlighting the urgency of the debate on the issue. Here are articles from Euronews and the World Meteorological Organization.

📢🇪🇺 The majority of European companies are against reducing the requirements of the CSRD Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, according to a survey by #WeAreEurope in partnership with HEC Paris.

📢🇧🇷 The Sustainability-Related Financial Information Report will be released “as a pioneer” on June 2 by Vale, one of the largest mining companies in the world. According to the Market Announcement of May 28, the report follows the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards and the CBPS Sustainability Disclosure pronouncements. Its disclosure will be voluntary, in line with CVM guidelines, anticipating by two years the obligations of CVM Resolution No. 193/23. Stay tuned.

🌎 UNFCCC Shares Highlights from First Climate Week of 2025.

Climate Week 2025 in Panama City, hosted by the UNFCCC on May 21, highlighted important advances in carbon markets and the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

A key focus was the new Implementation Forum, which brought together experts to unlock progress in climate finance, technology and carbon markets. The event reinforced the need for collaboration between governments, companies and civil society to ensure that emissions trading mechanisms are effective and transparent.

Article 6, which regulates the international trade of carbon credits, is being structured to ensure environmental integrity and avoid double counting. It is expected to be fully implemented by 2025, allowing countries and companies to use carbon credits to achieve their climate goals.

🇮🇩 Partnership between Indonesia and Gold Standard.

On May 8, 2025, Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with Gold Standard, strengthening the country’s position in the global carbon credit market.

This agreement allows Indonesian projects to continue or begin certification under the Gold Standard for the Global Goals, provided they meet the requirements set by the government. It also creates a working group to coordinate the implementation of the MRA, including the integration of registration systems and the management of carbon credits1.

The Indonesian Minister of Environment highlighted that this partnership opens new opportunities for Indonesian projects in the international carbon market and attracts investment for sustainable development.

Since the launch of the Indonesian Carbon Exchange on September 26, 2023, to April 30, 2025, 112 licensed issuers have participated, with a cumulative transaction value of IDR 77.92 billion and a total traded volume of 1,598,750 tCO₂e.

AROUND THE WORLD

🇨🇦🇨🇭 Northern Hemisphere Weather Situation: Wildfires in Canada, Melting Ice in Switzerland

In Canada, more than 17,000 people are being evacuated in Manitoba as the province faces its worst start to the wildfire season in years. Across Canada, 134 fires remain active, half of them out of control in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario, as the country braces for another devastating fire season.

Follow the Government of Canada’s Fire Weather Maps here, which are colours-coded to reflect these levels here.

There are several videos on YouTube about this, for example this one from 9News: Wildfires raging across central and western Canada send hazardous smoke to U.S.

In Switzerland, after the collapse of the glacier that buried the village of Blatten, more problems arose, such as new silting, flooding upstream, the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere, more melting, more sediments, and overloading of dams downstream.

🏛️The European Central Bank (ECB) warns of risks to the financial system due to the relaxation of ESG rules.

On May 8, 2025, the ECB published a legal opinion on proposed changes to the guidelines for corporate sustainability reporting and due diligence. The document examines modifications to the CSRD and CSDDD Directives.

It warns that the relaxation of sustainability disclosure rules could increase systemic financial risks, compromising the supervision of the sector. The reduction in the quality of ESG data would make it difficult to identify climate and environmental risks, affecting market stability. In addition, the lack of transparency could distort markets, undermining investor confidence and the allocation of resources to sustainable investments.

In view of these challenges, the ECB recommends that companies maintain strict disclosure standards, ensuring data integrity and avoiding negative impacts on long-term economic resilience.
