ESG and Global Investor Returns Study.

Today is Monday, September 25, 2023.

While doubts about the reliability of ESG ratings persist, Kroll, a financial advisory firm headquartered in New York with offices around the world that focuses on governance, risk and transparency, has published a 105-page study.

The conclusion?

"Analysis found that companies with better ESG ratings generally outperformed those with lower ratings over the 2013−2021 period."

Kroll researchers focused on the relationship between a company’s total stock returns—dividends plus capital appreciation—and the ESG rating issued by MSCI Inc., with seven individual ESG rating categories (i.e., AAA, AA, A, BBB, BB, B and CCC) and aggregate ratings (i.e., Leaders, Average and Laggards).

Over the 2013-2021 period, 13,000 companies across a variety of industries and locations around the globe were examined: four geographic regions (World, North America, Western Europe, and Asia Pacific) and 12 countries or territories (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, India, Japan, South Korea, the UK and the U.S.).
