Yesterday we mentioned small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) surprised by their international customers with demands regarding the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and questionnaires on greenhouse gas emissions.
The testimonies were given live - we were there - at an event at the headquarters of the Federation of Industry of the State of São Paulo (FIESP) on August 13, 2024. One of them added the following:
“So I went researching, I looked for someone who could guide us, help us. I knocked on several doors, got no response. This is where I found SENAI.”
Created in 1942 in Brazil and with state segmentation, SENAI is the National Industrial Learning Service. It is present in thousands of municipalities, offers courses at all levels of professional and technological education and has trained more than 70 million professionals, including through cooperation agreements with other countries such as Angola, Paraguay, Cape Verde, Peru, Guinea Bissau, Guatemala, São Tomé and Príncipe, Jamaica, East Timor and Haiti.
The event was to launch the Decarbonization Journey for industry in the State of São Paulo, in a joint partnership between FIESP, SENAI-SP and SEBRAE-SP. There are negotiations with the national SENAI so that all companies in the industry system can register for the program.
Initially focusing on SMEs, it is about specialized consultancy in 6 stages:
(1) Diagnosis
(2) Data Management
(3) GEE Inventory (courses and platform)
(4) Process Optimization (lean manufacturing and energy efficiency)
(5) Reduction Plan (SBTi methodology)
(6) Implementation (incl. financing)
Similar to another program, the Digital Transformation Journey, industrial companies with revenues of up to R$ 8 million will have these consultancies paid for by FIESP / SENAI, estimated in a generic way by one of the panelists in 4 hours for the diagnosis, 20-40 hours in the intermediate stages and over 100 hours in the final stages. As for future cycles, the company will already be able to act autonomously.
Regarding the results achieved by SMEs that have already joined the program, average gains of 37% in energy efficiency were mentioned. The case of a locksmith shop was also mentioned, with 90% gains in efficiency.
On the same occasion, SENAI-SP and Desenvolve-SP signed a cooperation agreement, with the objective of developing credit lines to promote innovation, decarbonization and the competitiveness of industries in the state of São Paulo.
Other relevant topics mentioned at the event were Carbon Credits, the Brazilian Emissions Trading System (not yet approved by Congress) and the European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) already in the pre-operational phase.
