The largest solar energy park in Brazil and one of the largest in Latin America, the Solar Complex of Janaúba, was inaugurated at the beginning of this month.
Located about 550 kilometers north of Belo Horizonte, the city of Janaúba has strong levels of irradiation, little cloudiness and is considered one of the best regions for generating solar energy in the country.
According to the National Electric Energy Agency, wind and solar sources currently account for almost 90% of the energy generation capacity added to the grid in Brazil, and ionly n the first half of 2023 alone, 59 new plants were registered, adding 2 .2 GW.
Click here for the latest update (July 7th) of ABSOLAR infographic indicating solar photovoltaics in 2nd place, as 14.8% of the Brazilian energy matrix - after hydro in 1st. with 50.4% and followed by wind with 12.0% - and lots of other information.
And the Janaúba Solar Complex adds a lot to all this.
Check out these impressive features:
installed capacity of 1.2 GW
enough energy to supply 1.8 million homes (equivalent to cities like Recife or 80% of Paris or 50% of Uruguay)
total area of 3,069 hectares
equivalent to 4,300 soccer fields
20 solar parks
2.2 million solar modules
4.3 million tons of CO2 less in the atmosphere
As we have been posting, the States are very active in mitigation and adaptation to the adverse effects of climate. And in Minas Gerais this is not different, inclusive with the State joining the Race to Zero, global initiative that aims to neutralize net emissions of greenhouse gases in the planet by 2050.
And in the image below to read more about the project, an asset from Elera Renováveis, a subsidiary of Brookfield Renewable Partners, of the Canadian group Brookfield Asset Management, and which operates in the segment of energy generation and commercialization of electric energy in Brazil. Brookfield Renewable Partners is present in North America, South America, Europe and Asia, and has approximately 25 GW of installed capacity and more than 5 thousand assets.
